FashionTrend Alert: The Short Suit

When my sister first clued me into this short suit trend, my initial reaction was “ew, no.” But then she mailed me a clipping of the original article from the Wall Street Journal and, well, I’m pretty sure this is really, really cute. Now, not everyone is a fan, and granted, it may not be totally appropriate for the stuffiest offices, but the great thing about the short suit is that it looks super chic and tailored anywhere in-between.

Celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Eva Longoria, and Amanda Seyfried have been seen embracing the trend with stylish success.

Jason Wu’s take on the trend at his Spring 2011 show might just be my favorite. How chic is the look in the middle! And, according to WSJ, we have a cropped tuxedo to look forward to in his upcoming resort collection. Yes, please.

I LOVE Erin Fetherston’s springy colors and feminine cuts. Perfect for work or play!

With all of these adorable options, it’s a breeze to find a short suit for every occasion. Plus, it looks equally on-trend with heels and flats alike, so feel free to mix it up! (I’m a big fan of cute oxfords or boat shoes for a casual, vacation-ready look).

Make it LuLu*s and get creative with these adorable mix-and-match-able pieces! (There’s a lot more where that came from, too…)

Is this a look that you’ll be willing to try? Or will you stick to skirts?

BeautyBeauty How-To: Black Eyeliner

Is anybody else out there as hopelessly terrible at applying eyeliner as I am?!?

If so, this post is for you.

After doing a little research, I realized that there are about a billion and one sites out there with tips and tricks to get the perfectly application. For summer black, the key seems to be creating clean lines for a simple sophisticated look that doesn’t look too messy. Sadly, my middle name is Messymcgee (all one word), and I’m just plain awful at it. Luckily, I came across this little gem during my searching, and I now feel that there may be hope for me yet!

After quite a while of hunting on YouTube through the myriad tutorials available, I came across Bebexo. This talented little lady goes through the basics of applying all three kinds of liner:  pencil, liquid, and gel. She also gives you some great products to use that you can find at the drugstore — no expensive products needed for a totally fab look! The best tip I learned was to start at the middle of my eye — how did I not know that?!

She even uses my own personal favorite kind of black eyeliner:  Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Eyeliner. This stuff stays on like nobody’s business, even through swimming!! Seriously. I tried. Now I’m going to have to go home and practice getting it to look good!

What kind of liner lady are you? Pencil? Liquid? Gel?

What’s that? You don’t know how to tie a tie? Well then let me enlighten you in case you ever have a studly man in need of your assistance!

Now, this is just the basic way of tying a tie. Other methods include the Half Windsor and Windsor, which you can check out once you master the basic. Personally, I’m a big fan of this easy one because it’s quick and still looks great. Plus, your man will really thank you for getting him out of the house on time.

Here’s a quickie reminder if you just need a refresher:
P.S. This is a business card. How cool is that?

Add to all that the fact that with menswear being a big trend for the ladies right now, you can easily steal one of your dad’s or boyfriend’s ties and add it to your ensemble to a quick touch of class.

Check out a couple of these great tie-inspired look from the Paul Smith Fall 2011 Ready-to-Wear collection.

So, now that you know how to tie a tie and where to wear it, it’s time to put it into practice. Make your sweetie a nice dinner tonight and convince him to let you practice.
