As I’m sure all you lovely ladies already know, jewel tones are making a striking comeback this fall. From brightly colored bags to silky tops and berry-colored shoes, this trend is making sure black doesn’t get all the fun when the weather gets cold.

One of my favorite areas where jewel tones have been spotted is in cosmetics. Lush lips and vibrant eyes are all the rage, and I wanted to give you gals a couple of ideas to play around with when you’re trying it out for yourself (I know you want to).

What You Need:

  • Jewel tone eyeshadow of your choice
  • Black eyeliner
  • Black eyeshadow
  • Cranberry eyeshadow and cream eyeshadow (optional)
  • Mascara
  • Fake eyelashes (optional)
  • Eyeshadow brushes for application and blending

Here, our talented Makeup Artist Sarah shows off a gorgeous navy and blue theme on our beautiful model Alyssa. If you look closely, you’ll note that there is a lighter shade in the inner corners and a blending of the darker pink up towards the brow bone.

There is no “right way” to pull off this look, so have fun and experiment! You can’t go wrong with lots of eyeliner, mascara, and color. You can even mix more than one color if you like. Just remember to use primer, so it doesn’t all flake off onto your cheeks, and blend, so you don’t get a scary eighties nightmare.

Here are a couple more pictures for inspiration.

Both these girls have a bit of a vampy red lip, but if you’re going to wear the dramatic eye during the day, I’d suggest going with a more nude lip so nobody tries to stake you.

Tips for Wearing Jewel Tone Makeup:

  • Avoid going too matchy-matchy with your makeup and wardrobe; for example, if you’re wearing gold eyeshadow, go with a colorful purse or a vibrant top.
  • Be conscious of where you wear it; while it’s easily awesome for a club or night out with friends, it has the possibility of being a little overboard for the office. If you do choose to wear it to work, try a little less black and a more muted color.
  • Don’t be afraid! Autumn is a fantastic time to try out a bolder look. With a little practice, anybody can rock it.
  • Be yourself! Play around with colors, amount of application, etc. Make this look all your own.
