Spring Nail Colors from Orly: The Cool Romance Collection

Beauty | 10 April 2012

by

From the dramatic spring storm to the soft petals of fresh blooms, the Cool Romance Collection by Orly gathers everything you love about spring into a collection of six colors. Soft and sweet, we couldn’t help noticing what a perfect pairing these nail lacquers are for our Springside Bowl Lookbook!

Following the color trends for 2012, the collection can be broken into three very important categories for spring:

Blush: Prelude to a Kiss, Artificial Sweetener, and a pinky-purplish shade called You’re Blushing.
Grey: Faint of Heart and a metallic gunmetal shade called Steel your Heart.
Mint: The stand-alone shade for Spring 2012, bottled in the form of Jealous, Much?

Maybe She's Born With It: Maybelline Calendar 2012

Beauty | 10 April 2012

Oh 2012, what will your next eight months bring? So far we’ve had a craze of minty freshness and pops of powerful citrus, but Maybelline seems to think the future might just be even brighter than that. With fistfuls of glitter, a whole lot of spandex, and some berry beautiful shades of eyeshadow and lipstick, the window-washers, teachers, and mechanics of the future are about to have a whole lot more glam under their tool belts.

No pants required! We writers are definitely in the right profession.

Next time I need to change a tire, I’ll make sure to pack my bodysuit and fishnets.

No need to microwave the leftovers; takeout just got so much hotter!

Beauty How To: Runway Color Pop Eyeshadow

Beauty | 06 April 2012

by

Eye, yay, yay! In every color and every style, the bold and brightly-colored eye has been color-popping its way onto runways across the globe. We love the look, but can you actually wear that???

This week we took our beauty inspiration from the looks of Dries Van Noten, Miu Miu, and Prabal Gurung (pictured above) and did a little modifying to create looks for the everyday girl. Check it out:
On Olivia, we took inspiration from Miu Miu’s red color-bars by applying Obsessive Compulsive’s eye shadow in Burning just across the lid. Paired with turquoise or aqua (and perhaps a matching red nail lacquer) you’ve got a bright little experiment that’s not too over-the-top.
After falling in love with Dries Van Noten’s up-to-the-eyebrow runway look, we went with a chartreuse/yellow shadow on Grace, and darkened the eyebrow. Add a soft pink lip and enjoy the shades of spring!
Prabal Gurung’s diagonal swipes of blue had such a bold space-age look that we decided to tone them down by working a modified cat-eye across the lid, and around the inner eye. Perfect for the medium to dark complexion!

Would YOU wear any of these looks?

Trend Alert: Candy-Colored Nails by Obsessive Compulsive

Beauty | 19 March 2012

by

I have a confession: I’m wearing nail polish for the first time in a decade!

I can’t help it, I’m totally smitten by the candy-colored palette I just received from Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics. Not only is OCC 100% vegan and cruelty-free, but the color palettes are totally on-trend, and the quality far exceeds the price (just like LuLu*s!). When I brought these new colors out, the warehouse became a frenzy of nail painting and we discovered that these nail lacquers have a super-smooth coat that goes on really nicely, and dries quickly. What more could you want?

Obsessive Compulsive Nail Lacquer in Something, Pansy, and Pageant.

The Results: The warehouse favorite was undoubtedly Something, being a creamy almost-but-not-too-shocking shade of pastel blue. For me, though, it’s gotta be Pansy, bearing an in-between shade of pinky-purple that is actually a little more subtle than pictured.

Hair Flair: Colette Malouf Sketch Style Tutorials

Beauty | 15 March 2012

If you’re a visual learner, then these incredible hair tutorials by Collette Malouf are about to be your new best friend.

This New York born and bred hair flair fashionista has been making her mark on tresses everywhere since the early eighties, and you just might have seen her work on shows like “Sex and the City” and “Gossip Girl,” as well as on runways of Michael Kors and Michael Lam. Colette is known for introducing easy yet classic styles to the public at large, including staples like the French twist, stick twist, and figure eight.

Two decades later, Colette is still helping the everyday lady stay chic and fashionable with her online hairstyle tutorials. Whether you’re need inspiration for a down ‘do or a fancy updo, simply head over to her website, where you can click on the various styles below for an animated sketch tutorial. (Sorry, the tutorials themselves wouldn’t link to our blog, only the pictures. You’ll just have to visit her site for yourself!)

Inspired yet? Head on over to her styles section to view your tutorial of choice! (I love the Grecian!)

I also love that you can pause the sketches if you need a little extra practice on one step or another; the pictures are engaging and clear so that you can avoid all the frustrations normally accompanied with teaching yourself hair styles.

Just can’t get enough? Here’s a great “in person” tutorial I found on Colette’s YouTube channel.

Now get stylin’!
