The best look for you is one that flatters your body type.

How many times have you fallen in love with a dress, only to find that it alters your proportions in a maybe-not-so-good way? Throughout the years, ladies, I have decided that there are some looks I will just not do, and others that make shopping at a glance totally doable.

Since the subject is wonderfully vast, I’ve decided to break it up into a few parts. Today we will explore Pears and Rectangles.

1. Pear-Shaped: If you have a pear-shaped figure, then you are bigger on the bottom than the top. Your curves tend to appear below your natural waistline, and you may have an average to smaller bust.

Looks for you include full skirts, dresses belted at the natural waistline, fitted tops, and you can usually get away with strapless dresses. You’ll want to accentuate your thinner waist, and you can boost your bust line with a few ruffles or a paneled bust.

Paired with that cute little bustier on the left, that swishing full skirt will put your hips and thighs comfortably in their place.

BB Dakota by Jack makes a lot of cute dresses with full skirts, like this strapless dress on the right.

2. The Rectangle: If you have a rectangle-shaped figure, then you are less curvy, with a straighter torso and less defined waist.

The flappers of the twenties were experts at showing off this body type with dropped waistlines and straight shift dresses. If you want to look a little curvier, try a surplice or overlapping bodice, or a top that flares at the waistline.

Tops for the Rectangle-Shaped Figure
The oversized fit in the upper half of these tops cinches in at the waist to create a nice hourglass shape.

These straight dresses will give you that cute flapper look that works great when you have narrow hips. Own it sisters!

These two dresses cinch in at the waist and have swooping panels of fabric that create the illusion of curves.
