Best Picture – Dallas Buyers Club vs. 12 Years a Slave

As two of the most emotionally-driven, well-acted, simply heart-breaking movies of the year, it is no wonder they are the top contenders for Best Picture. Both are stories of men fighting for their lives, for their freedom, and the overpowering will to just live. With all-star casts and This is going to be a tough choice, but our money is on Dallas Buyers Club.

Best Actor – Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) vs. Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street)

McConaughey plays Ron Woodruff, a stubborn cowboy diagnosed with HIV, who finds a loophole in bringing necessary prescriptions to other suffering from the same illness. He is convincing and breath-taking, and our will to fight is as strong as his throughout the entire movie. Leo plays a narcissistic playboy, whose one driving force is money. He is crass and unapologetic, and all the while he is charming and captivating, and you can’t help but want to watch his plight. Who do we choose? Hands down – Matthew takes this one.

Best Actress – Amy Adams (American Hustle) vs. Meryl Streep (August: Osage County)

Amy Adams should win an Oscar for her hair alone, but really, she is absolutely stunning as Sydney Prosser, a con-woman extraordinaire. You may find yourself conflicted to be rooting for the bad guys, but Adams makes it look easy. Streep, the Golden Goddess of the Oscars, is perfection as Violet Weston, the matriarch of a sordid family, suffering from cancer, yet maintaining her wit and humility. She shines. Period. Our winner? Meryl Meryl Meryl.
