With the New Year close at hand, I thought we’d take a look back on 2011 using one of the most common motifs to orbit the sun: the mug of Lady Gaga.

From Vogue to Vanity Fair, Bazaar to Visionaire, the honorable Lady Gaga managed to grace a whopping 36 magazine covers in 2011. With her shocking facial prosthetics and bold antics (like claiming they were real) there seemed to be no one we would have rather seen staring us down in the grocery aisle, or rolled up in our dimly lit mailboxes. But I ask you, do you think you saw all 36?

For the grand finale this 7 foot tall copy of Visionaire, with a limited print of 2500 copies, sums up the impact of Gaga-Mania; larger than life indeed.

Saturated Brights of Elle Denmark May 2011

With a beautiful editorial featuring super saturated bright colors, Elle Denmark really hit a home run with their May 2011 issue featuring model Laura Blokhina and photographer Sigurd Grunberger. I love the contrast of the light wood-paneled wall behind the model. It really allows the saturated colors to shine and take center stage. 83rd Academy Awards: Oscar Worst and Best Dressed

Okay, guys, let’s talk Oscars. Did any of you watch last night?

First of all, there seemed to be a very strong tribute to the red carpet, with several stars flaunting their version of that classic crimson.

Radiant in Red

Jennifer Lawrence went for a more casual, effortless look, while Sandra Bullock and Anne Hathaway glammed it up a bit more with strapless cuts and red lipstick.

Feathered Friends

Halle Berry and Hillary Swank pull off this look so elegantly it doesn’t even look like they’re trying. Jealous!

Finally, my favorites. It was hard to narrow it down to the top three, but after a bowl of praline ice cream and much debate, here are my picks.

Best-Dressed

Mila Kunis continues to rock, well, pretty much everything, and this gorgeous lavender dress doesn’t disappoint. Reese Witherspoon is just classicallly gorgeous in this strapless number (secretly, I think it was my favorite of the night), and her makeup was just glowing in her interviews. And then, the lovely Hailee Steinfeld. This girl is just adorable! After watching her red carpet interview, I was wowed both by her humble, excited spirit as well as by this princess gown.

I always hate doing the worst bit, because I love all these actresses. Sadly, it has to be done.

Worst-Dressed

Amy Adams’ glittery blue high-neck gown with weird non-matching necklace did nothing for her arms or her figure. Sorry Amy! And oh, Melissa Leo. This poor dress reminded me of a doily with tinfoil accents. Sad. Finally, I actually really like Marisa Tomei’s dress, but it fit her soooooo terribly and awkwardly that she made the list.

These last three have me unsure.

On the Fence

I loved the Cate Blanchett’s hair, makeup, and skirt, but the bodice of her dress looked like something out of a future space queen novel. Also, I wanted to love Nicole Kidman’s white strapless dress, but what is going on with those weird hip accents? Anne Hathaway’s blue dress and hair were stunning, but I can’t decide if I like the weird shiny material or not.

Fall 2011 Beauty: Vera Wang

Aside from all the amazing clothes, my other favorite part of seeing the various designer collections each season is checking out the beauty concepts debuted at each show. So far, one of my favorites has been Vera Wang. Cruising through Style.com for all the latest shows as they come out is one of the easiest ways to take a behind-the-scenes look at the newest and hottest beauty trends for the coming season. With a modern spin on the ever popular smokey eye, the team at Clé de Peau Beauté smudged beautiful shades of soft charcoal and what looks to be hints of camel and violet. It is ultra-feminine, yet still strong and powerful with the focus of the entire look being the eye.

A soft peach lip compliments the deep and smokey eye without overpowering the look.

This is a look I will definitely be trying out this fall!

Happy New Year: Bring It On 2011!

Well, we’ve made it through the first decade of the 21st century.

Hard to believe, huh? Where does the time go?

A hundred years ago, it was the end of 1910. Here’s what the world had experienced that year:

The Boy Scouts of America was incorporated.
Yellow Cab was founded.
The Earth passed through the tail of Comet Halley.
An act of the U.S. Congress established Glacier National Park in Montana.
First flight of a seaplane.
First flight of the jet engine airplane.

And here’s what we had to look forward to in 1911:

The first landing of an aircraft on a ship.
International Women’s Day was celebrated for the first time.
The New York Public Library opened.
Hiram Bingham III re-discovers Machu Picchu “the Lost City of the Incas.”
Chevrolet officially enters the automobile market in competition with the Ford Model T.
First expedition reaches the South Pole.

A hundred years later, we’ve lived through the invention of color TV, internet, cell phones, modern refrigerators, cars with AC units, tape players, records, ipods, cell phones, Starbucks, VHS, movies, microwaves, Facebook!, and countless other inventions. 2010 debuted the iPad, a driverless car, the first synthetic cell, and spray-on fabric, with some pretty crazy inventions in the works as well.

That just begs the question:

What will 2011 bring?

For me, I hope it brings a cleaner apartment, a few published poems, and a triathlon. What about you? What goals do you have for the next year? And what new inventions do think we’ll see this year? Post below!
