Looks We ♥: Patterned Platforms

Fashion | 24 May 2012

Now that sandal season is upon us, allow me to introduce my latest and greatest obsession: the patterned platform.

Prada hit the nail on the head last spring (below), and Charlotte Olympia followed suit this year (above), with her simplicity up top and whimsical prints below. How cute is that sheet music!

Now, we’ve been acquiring quite the collection here at LuLu*s, so just try and resist the printiest platforms of all!

Model Profile: Meet Allie

Interviews | 21 May 2012

by

Meet Allie, the absolutely amazing model from our new lookbook, The Girl & The Sea. She was incredibly genuine and fun to be around, plus super easy to talk to! Below we asked her a few Q’s so you could get to know her more. And, as an added bonus, we have some exclusive pics from the lookbook that you can only see on the blog!
1. What’s your sign?
I’m a full-on LEO.

2. How did you get into modeling?
I started modeling as a 9 year-old, shooting catalogue for department stores. My mom sacrificed several days a week to drive me to San Francisco and sit through my shoots.

3. What is your favorite spring trend?
I’m into all the loud graphic prints that are recently popular. I also looove maxis. Super flattering and comfy. :)

4. I couldn’t live without my…
Kickboxing class! I literally look forward to it the whole week, and when the class is cancelled or there is a substitute instructor, it ruins my day.

5. What do you see as the next “it” thing?
I’m a big fan of cool athletic gear. I love a good track suit, and drop-crotch sweats with high-tops. Right now, most girls are afraid to dress like a guy with street style . . . but I love it, and I think it will catch on.

6. What’s your new favorite item on Lulus.com right now?
As soon as warm weather hits, I stack on the bangles. I love the “Press Play Orange Bangle Set”. Orange looks good with everything.

7.What was your favorite part/shot of the recent lookbook shoot?
Easy! My favorite part of the shoot was towards the end of the day, when we were out on the boat, trying to get the shot on the bow . . . the whole boat was rocking back and forth like CRAZY. I was trying to stand up and look amazing, (and not look like I felt as if we were in Antarctica), while struggling to keep my balance and not fall into the water. I ended up falling down 20 times, crashing from one side to the next… but it was hilarious and I laughed the whole time. I like a challenge. ;)

8. What was your favorite/least favorite thing about being on The City?
Oh man… I have too many answers for this question. My favorite thing about the show was watching the edited episodes. We never had a CLUE how the scenes were actually going to end up after the editors chopped and stirred every reaction and situation. It was always a shock.
My least favorite part would be . . . being portrayed to the world as someone I’m not. It’s annoying to be forced to act whiny, sad and upset all the time, when I was actually very happy and having fun. I remember always saying “Aw mannn do I have to act sad again?” “Do we have to fight again?”  ”Cant we do a happy, fun scene?” Then the one time I was told we were filming a “fun, girls night out” but the episode was ACTUALLY about a sad, bitter woman confronting me about being too thin. #notcool

9. Any advice for aspiring models?
Sure, the #1 piece of advice I will give to aspiring models is **you cannot take criticism personally. We get paid to be criticized and judged by anyone and everyone. You have to think of your image like a tool you use to make money. If your agency tells you your skin isn’t presentable- go to a dermatologist, do what you need to do to fix it. If you’re told you’re too skinny or too thick, you CAN’T let it make you depressed. Just realize your image is your tool, and you can’t let it get you down. There will ALWAYS be criticism and mean comments out there, but that’s part of the job… a BIG part of the job. xx

Cannes Film Festival Fashion

Fashion | 21 May 2012

by

The 65th Annual Cannes Film festival just kicked off its eleven-day event, bringing actors and filmmakers from far and wide. While we’re definitely excited for upcoming films, we’re even more interested in what our favorite stars are wearing!
From Jessica Chastain to Fan Bingbing, the styles were gorgeous giving Cannes a very fashionable start!
Eva Longoria looked absolutely stunning in this Marchesa gown with a beautiful train. I choo choo choose this as a favorite look!
Jessica Chastain’s red locks wow against her sparkly white gown, while Marion Cotillard looks sultry and sweet in her chiffon gown.
Model Natasha Poly wore one of my favorite looks from Gucci’s runway, and the blush-colored gown Naomi Watts wore also brought some train love.
Actress Chen Ting Jia’s gown was really a showstopper, especially when she turned around. Wowzas!
Diane Kruger looked perfectly elegant in her flowing gown, while Freida Pinto looked pretty in her pink beaded dress.
Last, but not least my favorite Fan Bingbing arrived in a beautiful beaded number. According to Red Carpet Fashion Awards, her hair was styled as a symbol of the Tang dynasty’s noble women and the gown was embroidered with stories of the four beauties of ancient China. I’d love to see it in person!

Gwen Stefani, The No Doubt Years

Celebrity | 18 May 2012

by

I love Gwen Stefani. I always have and always will.
I remember stealing my sister’s Tragic Kingdom album (and later her Return of Saturn album) and doing my best to memorize every lyric, and I even tried to pay homage to her at school by wearing a bindi . . . but admittedly I can’t pull it off as well as Gwen.
So when news broke that the band No Doubt would be releasing their first album in over a decade, I got suuuuuper excited, to say the least! So excited, I decided to share my look back at 90′s (and early 2000s) Gwen and her amazing sense of style.
Love. Love. Love. I suddenly have the urge to dye my hair pink, and Gwen’s tiny shirts are still a classic! Of course, we can’t leave this post without No Doubt’s number one hit, Just a Girl.
Anyone else exicted for No Doubt’s return? Let us know in the comments!

Film to Fashion: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

Fashion | 18 May 2012

by

As my fellow cinephiles out there can attest, some classic films have a magic about them that make you feel like you’re right there in it, watching history change before your very eyes. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, filmed waaay back  in 1919, was at the forefront of the German Expressionist movement, and the most classic of all classic horror fiilms (yes, even before Nosferatu!). Madmen, murder, sleepwalkers, and silent screams . . . Oh yes, it’s silent, which always takes a little getting used to for us modern viewers, but the striking, abstract visuals are more than enough to keep you hooked.
With something so stylized, my mind automatically shifts from highly stylized… to highly stylish! How can I wear this?! So how about working some Caligari-inspired pieces into your wardrobe? Abstract prints, sharp angles, and geometric shapes channel the silent classic, while injecting some sharp chicness into these dramatic looks!

1. Nightin-gala Black Silk Dress, 2. Spice-icles Spike Necklace, 3. Maze to Order Black and White Print Top, 4. Your Tribe Has Spoken Yellow Print Leggings, 5. What’s Your Angle? Gold Stretch Bracelet, 6. Chevron Command Print Scarf, 7. Privileged Keaton Black Shootie Heelless Platforms, 8. Matiko Bali Black Print Thong Platform Sandals, 9. A-Cute Angle Gold Necklace
