Artist to Watch: Freelance Whales

Music | 02 June 2011

Freelance Whales can only be described as a multi-instrumental, electic, fun-loving indie-pop band. Both their music and their demeanor is catchy and makes you feel right at home. I first discovered them a while back on one of my favorite music blogs, I Guess I’m Floating. Since then, I haven’t been able to stop listening to their songs.

Hailing from Brooklyn, NY, the band gained notoriety while playing in the New York subway. They self-released their EP Weathervanes in early 2009, and re-released it again under their label Mom + Pop in April 2010. Most of the songs off the EP were a compilation of chilhood memories and dream journaling composed by the frontman Judah Dadone.

An interesting fact about the band is that Chuck Criss (who plays banjo and a plethora of other things) is the brother of Glee‘s Darren Criss. Obviously talent runs in the family. Below is the video for my favorite song on their album, entitled “Hannah.”

What do you guys think of Freelance Whales?

Valentine's Day Makeup Inspiration: Dianna Agron

Celebrity | 11 February 2011

by

Whether you’ve got a date with your sweetie or dinner with friends, this weekend is the weekend to bust out your peachy pastels and poppin’ pinks to create some lovely Valentine’s Day looks. If you need some inspiration (don’t we all?), look no further than the beautiful Dianna Agron.

This girl is pretty much always gorgeous — even playing a high school cheerleader in Glee — but I was just blown away by the soft romance she debuted here at the premiere of I Am Number Four.

The overwhelming theme here is soft, blooming, and not overdone. To set off her eyes, she’s gone with a smoky gray that blends out to the corners and a shimmery ivory-colored color at the inner corners to really open them up. Polish it off with black liner on the top and bottom and a coat or five of mascara (okay, okay, she’s probaby got some falsies on, but you can go crazy with the mascara and lash curler to get the same idea), and you’re done!

To keep this look soft, Miss Agron kept her lips and cheeks fairy muted. A rosy blush and matching lipstick avoids anything gaudy and creates a very old-fashioned, princessy look. It also looks like she might have a bit of highligher (check out Stephanie‘s recommendations for the best one) on her cheeks to effect a glowing, youthful feel.

Okay, and I just have to talk about her hair really quickly. I LOVE this look:  it’s out of her face, totally touchable, and insanely beautiful. Could you get a better combination? (I think not.) It looks like she’s poofed the crown a bit and then wrapped the hair into a really twisty bun that is offset by her sweeping front bangs. This is also a great look to show off for guys who are freaked out by tons of hair spray and pins — it looks super low-maintenance.

With a gorgeous Grecian-style dress, a growing career, and her own Valentine (she’s dating I Am Number Four co-star Alex Pettyfer), I’d say Dianna is working on her own little fairytale!

Will you try this romantic look? Too girly for you or are you looking for something soft? (I’m definitely trying the hair!)

Glee went Gaga for Gaga!!

Music | 26 May 2010

Glee has been pulling out all the stops this season. They blew us away last month with “The Power of Madonna” episode (check out our blog about it), and last night they tackled “Theatricality”.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know no one does theatricality like Lady Gaga. The ladies of Glee (and Kurt!) sported looks inspired by Lady Gaga including her space gear, bubble dress and even an appearance of a stuffed animal (total disaster!) dress.

They didn’t just dress like Gaga, they performed Gaga. Last night’s episode featured a power house performance of “Bad Romance” and a softer version of “Poker Face”. If you didn’t watch it you better go find it somewhere quick!!

Want to get the Gaga look?

Unfortunately we are fresh out of dresses with bubbles and stuffed animals attached to them. However, last night Santana worked sexy black lace tights that I feel you can achieve thanks to our Starry Eyed Stirrup Tights. Paired up with our Be Blithe Dress in Black, you’ll be channelling your inner Gaga so soon, you’ll be playing your own love game.

What did you think of Glee gone Gaga? Who do you think rocked out Lady Gaga the best last night? Did the boys outshine the girls with their Kiss performance?

Glee and Madonna, but of course!

Return of Glee + Madonna + Sue Sylvester + the beauty of viral advertising = excellent viewing

Last night a promo video for Glee’s upcoming episode featuring a Madonna playlist was aired. Jane Lynch sings along to “Vogue,” making me want to grab the new Like a Prayer Gloves and dance around the warehouse circa 1990. Strike a pose, there’s nothing to it!!

Did you see these?
