We’re back with yet another amazing tutorial from the hair guru’s in the studio! The hair-bow has blown up ever since Gaga stepped out on the scene in a platinum version on the top of her head. While it was definitely a paparazzi-stopper, the LuLu*s version is a little more modest with a half-up, half-down style and a neatly tucked bow.

Step-by-step:

1. Pull hair into half-up, half-down section

2. Band hair as if creating a ponytail, pull hair through until a loop is made

3. Part loop and secure with pins

4. Take bottom section of hair loop and wrap around multiple times to create bow “knot” and secure with pins

5. Use pins to widen loops on each side to create the “bow” look

NYFW Fall 2013 Beauty Trends

NYFW isn’t over yet but I’ve already picked out some of my favorite beauty trends from the runways. Which trend are you currently coveting? Share it with us below in the comments!

Big Hair Don’t Care: Voluminous locks were all over the place from Kate Spade to DVF, and of course Marc Jacobs brought the trend to a new level with teased curls and a major pouf.

Statement Eyes: Eyeliner is usually a NYFW fave but eyes were taken to a new level with dark wings at Monique Lhuillier, Edie Sedgwick inspired eyes at Rag & Bone and a luscious lavender pop at Jason Wu.

Pink Punchy Pout: Shades of pink and magenta were spotted all over the runways and made all of us swoon for a hot pink lip.

Nailed It: Nude and neutral nails were a major hit for many designers but Prabal Gurung chose a skinny triangle in the midst of olive hued nails for his show and Kate Spade went edgy with almond shaped nails and an accent stud to boot!

DIY: Pastel Hair with Nymphette!

Pastel hair has been all the rage lately but have you ever wondered how to get luscious cotton candy colored locks on your own? The thing about pastel hair dye is it really doesn’t exist but with a couple easy steps you are on your way to the perfect hue of lilac or pale blue.

Decide what pastel shade or shades you want your hair to be. This is important because you need to purchase your color and more importantly prep your hair for coloring. Your hair will need to be a very pale yellow to almost white depending on what shade you want to go. Keep in mind the yellow in your hair will peak through since pastels are so pale. Certain colors won’t be affected by the yellow tones in your hair as much as others. For example, I have gone a pale pink while a pale yellow with no issues but if I wanted to go a pale blue it would turn a green tone. Most of us will have to bleach and tone our hair in order to get the ideal shade to ensure the perfect pastel tresses. This will also work on high quality human hair blonde extensions.

Mix your color. You are going to need conditioner, which is going to dilute your dye. Make sure the dye you purchase is a semi-permanent formula which most unnatural color dyes are. They are usually vegetable based dyes and can be diluted with regular hair conditioner. I am using Special Effects Sonic Green. Keep in mind that although these dyes are semi-permanent, they may stain your hair.

The conditioner you use doesn’t really matter but I do like to make sure it is white. It helps you gauge the color a lot easier than a colored conditioner. I also like to start with a generous amount of conditioner and add dye to it instead of the other way around. I feel I have more control of the color this way. You want to mix more color than you think you’ll need to avoid running out of color and remixing more color which might not match exactly.

Start by adding a little bit of dye to your conditioner and mix it thoroughly with a tint brush. You can pick this up very easily at Sally’s Beauty Supply or any other beauty supply.

You want to keep adding until you get to about 1 or 2 shades darker than your desired shade. I went about 3 shades darker because I have some yellow tones that need to be covered up.

Apply haircolor. Start applying your color to your hair. I like using my bare hands because the dye is so diluted now that it won’t stain my hands. I really like to get in there and massage the color into the hair. Apply liberally until your hair is saturated. I put on a disposable shower cap that I purchase for really cheap at the beauty supply to keep my hair out of the way while I wait for the color to process. The beautiful thing about using a vegetable dye is that it isn’t damaging and there is no maximum amount of time that you can leave it in your hair. In fact, I say the longer the better especially with the conditioner. I have found the longer I’ve let my color stay on, the longer it lasts. I keep the dye in my hair for as long as I have time for (or can tolerate) but I try to aim for at least 2 hours.

Wash haircolor out. I always wash my hair with cold water when my hair is an unnatural color. This prevents excess bleeding. I find pastels bleed way less than full strength bright colors so washing with cold water isn’t as important here but it’s up to you. I don’t usually shampoo after washing out the color. I like to give the color a couple days to penetrate my hair.

And here’s how my hair turned out!

I love contrasting my pastel hair with something bright or neon just like I do with my clothing. Sometimes it’s a bright lipstick and other times it’s a neon statement shoe or blazer. Here I am wearing the Notchy or Nice Chartreuse Blazer from Lulu’s.

… I’ve been head over heels for her new cut! And with summer swiftly approaching, I know I can’t be the only one with a hankering to chop it all off. And, as a big supporter of celebrity inspiration (I totally got “the Kristin” in 2005, ie: Laguna Beach), I put together this collection of awesome, shoulder-grazing, long bobs, or “The Lob” as its coming to be known. Making the Cut: Vidal Sassoon Then and Now

For anyone that has ever sported a bob or a pixie cut, it’s time to pay your respects to the one and only Vidal Sassoon.

The legendary hairstylist passed recently, leaving behind a legacy. Most of us know his name from his many salons hair products, but Sassoon also created famous cuts that helped revolutionize hair into what it is today.

Sassoon made his rise in the 1960s with the “five-point cut” which liberated women from the tyranny of rollers and hairspray, while still looking absolutely chic. His work was inspired by architecture, which is easy to see through his angular styles that frame the face, and models Grace Coddington, Peggy Moffitt, and Nancy Kwan (pictured above) served as Sassoon’s muses and trendsetters.

He created the official Mod hairstyle that was worn by Mary Quant and others in Carnaby Street. He was also famously paid $5,000 dollars by Roman Polanski to chop Mia Farrow’s long locks (in front of cameras and reporters) into the pixie cut she sported in Rosemary’s Baby.

Thankfully, the Sassoon effect is here to stay. Sassoon’s famous looks still make the cut with many of our favorite celebrities sporting them. All hail to Vidal Sassoon!

DIY: Saltwater Beach Spray!

Summer is fast approaching and as the weather warms up, the last thing we want to do is plug in a flat iron or any other hot tool to do our hair. This simple DIY will help you achieve saltwater kissed waves even if you don’t live anywhere near the beach. The best part is, this style takes less than 10 minutes to achieve and costs less than $10 for the materials. Here’s what you’ll need:

3 tbsp. finely ground sea salt
3 squirts of water-based hair gel
1/4 tsp. coconut conditioner
Tap water
8-10 oz. spray bottle

1. Add all of your ingredients to your spray bottle and add enough water to fill it up. Shake vigorously until all ingredients are combined.

2. Spray onto wet/damp hair and scrunch upward until a wave begins to form. Spray a small amount and scrunch as you go. Remember, less is more!

3. Either let it dry naturally or use a diffuser for a more tousled look

And voila! Enjoy that fresh-out-the-ocean look anywhere and keep the spray bottle in your purse for touch ups throughout the day!

How-To: Hair Chalking

Talk about non-committal, if you’ve ever wanted to add non-permanent color to your hair, then you might consider hair chalking. After seeing tons of fashion editorials that included casually-colored wisps, I decided to try out hair chalking with our daring studio assistant, Sarah. I used soft pastels from the art store, and because Sarah’s hair is light, it took color very well. The entire look took maybe ten minutes to complete.

Notes: Do not mix the soft pastels with any water (unless you have dark hair).

The chalk will naturally release throughout the day, so your look will eventually fade out.
