Pink Pout for Spring!

Beauty | 21 April 2010

Spring has finally arrived, and it’s time to break out those pretty pastels and lovely pinks when it comes to lip color.

Nyla, our Lulu*s makeup artist, updated yesterday’s shoot with some great new lip products, and our ladies looked absolutely lovely.

To get the look below, start off with “Trimmed in Pink” Lip Pencil by Mac, followed by Mac’s “Please Me” Matte Lipstick. Then, glaze your lips with Lip Fusion Gloss in “Blush” for a dazzling finish.

YouTube MakeUp Guru: Hollywood Noir Makeup

On a typical Wednesday night, I found myself once again searching on YouTube for a cool vintage makeup tutorial. My goal was to find just the right retro look for those upcoming holiday parties.

It was then that I came across one of the best Dita Von Teese inspired tutorials I have ever seen by makeup artist and writer, Ashley, known on YouTube as HollywoodNoirMakeup.

Ashley’s vids are so wonderful because you know you’re seeing professional quality work brought to you in an everyday, understandable language. Ashley uses her creativity and makeup artistry experience to teach her viewers anything from how to get the perfect red lip, to how to shape your brows, to more artistic and edgy makeup looks for those looking for a little something different. She is truly a makeup wizard with a MAC brush as her wand.

Here is the Dita Von Teese look I found. Give it a view, and watch the glamorous transformation begin!

The Perfect Cat Eyeliner

Beauty | 07 October 2009

by

Watching too many episodes of Mad Men has got me going retro, not only with the growing collection of vintage dresses and skirts in my closet, but with my beauty routine as well. Suddenly, I’m looking into modern-day spins on the beehive (blog post to come), bold red lips, and now, black-lined cat eyes.

The trick to the perfect cat eye is a steady hand, which many, like myself, lack when it comes to precision. So, practice a couple of times and have plenty of Q-tips and makeup remover nearby if you mess up.

Also, invest in a good quality eyeliner. There are many different forms to choose from, including liquid, pen and gel. If you’re first starting out, I’d opt for an easy-to-use pen, such as MAC’s Penultimate Eyeliner. After a couple weeks, you’ll feel more comfortable with gel and liquid and the intense pigment that they offer.

To start off your cat eye, make a flick (however long or short you want) from the outer corner of your eye and angling up. With your pen or brush, start from the inner most corner of your eye and carefully draw out and up to that flick, making the line thicker as you go.

For a visual demonstration, click the tutorial below brought to you by the lovely Sarah Victor for expert guidance (and subscribe to her channel already!)

With a few tries, you’ll be the cat’s MEOW!
