Must-See Movie: Bridesmaids

Celebrity | 01 June 2011

by

If you haven’t seen Bridesmaids yet, you’re missing out. But, now’s your chance!

I’ll admit, when I first heard about it, I was thinking cheesy chick flick…maybe some Kate Hudson or Cameron Diaz in there…falling all over themselves to get the guy…you know, the usual. Now, I mean no disrespect to the time-honored genre, but the first person to express any interest in Bridesmaids to me was a guy, so I was a little surprised that a man would be so excited for a movie about a bunch of girls in pretty dresses.

Oh how very mistaken I had been…Now, it is a comedy, and there is a little romance (it is about a wedding, for Pete’s sake) but this is much more Knocked Up than Bride Wars. And let me tell you, it is easily one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Yes, ever. But you don’t have to take my word for it, any comedy that can manage to score 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, is no joke (that sure beats The Hangover‘s 79%, I’m just sayin’….).
If you haven’t heard of it yet, here’s a taste:

Written by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo (who also makes an appearance in the movie as “nervous woman on plane”) and produced by comedy kingpin Judd Apatow (if you’ve seen a funny movie in the last decade, there’s a pretty good chance he had something to do with it), it’s no wonder Bridesmaids had me laughing out loud for two whole hours. But what really makes this movie remarkable is the cast.

This hilarious ensemble of ladies, headed by the adorable comedy powerhouse, Kristen Wiig, will have you laughing so hard that you almost fail to notice that…they’re all women! I can’t say I remember any other comedy this raunchy and hysterical that is headed by a cast of funny ladies, and it isn’t just “for girls.” Again, this is not a chick flick; men and women alike are rolling in the aisles over this gem. Finally, the ladies have broken into the boys club and proven that down and dirty comedy is not just for the guys anymore.

In an interview with
IMDB, Kriten Wiig was excited to introduce audiences to these “funny ladies that you maybe either haven’t seen before or have only seen little bits and pieces of.” It’s true. It took me about half of the movie before I realized that Rose Byrne played Jackie Q in Get Him to the Greek.

The other ladies? Melissa McCarthy (Gilmore Girls, anyone?) steals the show as the groom’s gruff sister. Interesting fact: “Air Marshall Jon” is actually her husband in real life! You may recognize Wendi McLendon-Covey from her role as Deputy Clementine Johnson on Reno 911, and of course there’s adorable Ellie Kemper from The Office.

And, of course, we know Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph from Saturday Night Live, among other things. These two ladies have such chemistry as best friends since childhood, I’m sure they must be best friends in real life, too.

Just listen to what good ol’ Rotten Tomatoes had to say about it: “A marriage of genuine characters, gross out gags, and pathos, Bridesmaids is a female-driven comedy that refuses to be boxed in as Kristen Wiig emerges as a real star.” So let’s hear it for the ladies! If you haven’t seen it yet, go see what these girls can do! And if you have, how much did you love it??

Justin Bieber: Never Say Never 3D

Celebrity | 14 February 2011

by

Dear Justin, I totally underestimated you! Please forgive me. To make it up to you I will be playing “U Smile” on repeat all day! This weekend was fun-filled, and one of the highlights was watching the the Justin Bieber movie, Never Say Never. Being older than the teen set and not watching too much TV, I knew of Justin Bieber but had no idea how truly talented he is. This movie, which chronicles his personal journey in a documentary style, was entertaining from start to finish and I would definitely recommend it to others. (Warning: spoilers below!)

While not following any strict timeline, Never Say Never shows Justin’s journey from a musically-inclined child to a pop superstar. There is plently of footage illustrating Justin’s talent developing at an early age which, for me, was the most eye-opening part of the movie. You watch as a young Justin bangs out a drum sequence on a chair with impeccable timing. Recognizing his ear for music, his supportive mother encourages him, buying him drum kits and guitars. The true innate talent of this young child is so obvious, breaking down any rumors or assumptions that he is just another fabricated illusion.

Throughout his early years Justin begins performing in his native Canada and even starts uploading YouTube videos to gain some exposure. Finding so much enjoyment in performing, Justin realizes that this is what he wants to do with his life. Scooter Braun, Justin’s manager, came upon these videos late one night and instantly became obsessed with the young boy’s potential, flying him out to Atlanta and eventually helping Justin and his mother move out to Georgia from Canada.

Early on, it was a struggle to find the best way to market Justin’s music. The team was often told to approach Disney or Nickelodeon to ensure exposure to the right age demographic. Focusing on the loyalty of Justin’s fans, Scooter booked Justin to play at every radio station and event that he could find, relying on the word-of-mouth and social media potential of the youth. As an end result, Justin’s fans are super loyal, feeling a sense of ownership and as though they found him first.

Several years of hard work and perseverance has paid off for Justin and his team. With the help of his idol, Usher Raymond IV, and many other influential people, Justin’s career has skyrocketed over the past few years. Now at 16, he has the success that he had only dreamed of as a child. While watching this movie I was really blown away by Justin’s talent. A superb vocal range and enough determination for ten people, this teen truly deserves the success and attention he receives.

Whether you love his music or you just love a good underdog success story, “Never Say Never” is worth watching. I definitely enjoyed watching the live footage, the choreographed dancing, and the loyalty of his fans. I guess you could say, I have a case of Bieber Fever! Justin, you made me a Belieber!

Did you see these?
