Meet the Vogels: How One Blue Collar Couple Amassed a Multi-Million Dollar Art Collection!

A lover of art, I often find myself watching documentaries and dramatizations of artist’s lives. “Pollock”, “Frida” or “Van Gogh in Arles” have their respective standings, but rarely do we hear the stories of the collectors and patrons who help fuel the art world.

Directed by Megumi Sasaki, “Herb & Dorothy”, lays out (in their own words) the the adult lives of the now infamous New York City couple who came to create one of the most important contemporary art collections in the world. With a true eye for art, and an obsession for collecting from artists that they liked, this adorable duo swept through the New York art scene accumulating thousands of works from the Minimalism and Conceptual movements before it was chic. They just liked the work.

With two average salaries (he worked for the post office, she worked as a librarian) the couple would budget and buy to feed their own fascinations. Living in a tiny one bedroom apartment, the Vogels eventually had almost no space in which to live. Artwork dominated every crevice from floor to ceiling, and then some!

Vowing to never sell a piece, despite how much many of the pieces had appreciated, the Vogels instead donated their collection to the National Gallery of Art.

A fun flick to watch no matter what you think about art, “Herb & Dorothy” definitely gave me a new outlook on what it takes to be a collector; love and determination!

Friday Style ICON: Iris Apfel

When I was living in NYC, I happened upon an exhibit featuring an eccentric fashion icon named Iris Apfel. The exhibit was called Rare Bird, a title that only begins to describe the collection of clothes that were on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

I became enamored with Iris — along with half of New York City, I presume — and was recently thinking back on the experience with awe. Then the other day, I found this GREAT video of Iris being interviewed and filmed while shopping.

My favorite thing about Iris Apfel is that she views fashion with so much energy and shows no fear in doing what she wants with it!

Fashion Week is one of the biggest events in the fashion industry, as it allows designers to show off their new collections on the runway, and gives buyers a chance to see all upcoming trends. Jill Stuart has been one of my fashion designers for a while and so far for Fall 2010 fashion week, Jill Stuart is once again my favorite.

Moving away from her risque Spring collection of short dresses with studs and spandex, Jill Stuart’s Fall collection is full of dark, almost goth looking boyfriend jackets worn over a variety of tight dresses, shorts, and high-waisted trousers.

New York Fashion Week Fall 2010 has begun!

During this week, Bryant Park transforms into a sea of white tents, and the fashion industry gathers to await this season’s runway shows. Designers from all around the world come to show off their latest collections.

So far, Monique Lhuillier’s Asian-warrior inspired collection is, without a doubt, my favorite collection. As in all of Lhuillier’s collections, there were a handful of beautiful evening gowns, and the two below were my favorites. These elegant, form fitting, strapless gowns would look amazing on any Hollywood actress walking the red carpet at the Oscars. I love how both of these gowns have rosettes that taper down the base of each dress.
