The Photography of Annie Leibovitz

You’ve all seen the work of Annie Leibovitz, whether you knew it or not.
One of the most prolific and well-known photographers of our time, Leibovitz shoots regularly for Vogue, and has been working for Vanity Fair since 1980 creating only the most exciting and richly developed covers and spreads!
As a young woman in Berkeley in the 70′s, Leibovitz signed on to work for the budding Rolling Stone magazine, and within three years graduated to chief photographer.

Going on tour with The Rolling Stones or to an interview with John Lennon to take pictures and cover shots was commonplace, and Leibovitz grew into a style all her own. See below an early picture of the infamous dancer, Mikhail Baryshnikov.

The most amazing thing about the work of Annie Leibovitz is that she has an uncanny talent for telling you something intimate about someone.
Beyond just a simple snapshot, Leibovitz would study her subjects for hours or days in order to get a shot that was honest and revealing.
Look at this perfect shot of Cate Blanchett on a bicycle. The lighting, the way her hair is blowing and the expression on her face all come together for that split second!
Part of an Alice in Wonderland shoot for Vogue.
Look at all of these Hollywood starlets in one room! It’s no accident that we see a sort of backstage scene exposing the rolling Hollywood hills and perhaps, a window into a little part of these women’s lives that we don’t ever see.
Part of an amazing retrospective photo shoot of Johnny Depp for Vanity Fair, many of the pics taken by Leibovitz herself!
Total eye candy!
An elaborate Vogue take on The Wizard of Oz featuring Keira Knightley, the Penn State Marching Band and artist Kara Walker!

. . . and who could forget this fantastic shoot with Lady Gaga and Lily Cole in a Hansel and Gretel-inspired scene.

Time for one of my favorite parts of the week! Blogger Spotlight! This week I am captivated by the beauty and whimsy of ponyhunter. Her photos are a source of inspiration to many, and I am sure this is not the first place she has been featured. Take a look, and I am sure you will agree: when you need a dose of visual pick-me-up this will be your first stop.

Living in New Zealand and working as a model, this young beauty seems to have unlimited, gorgeous backgrounds and an endless supply of girlish clothes. I love the mint-green, sheer curtain as a backdrop. The soft lighting always captures  a magical moment.

Make sure to visit her blog and make it one of your regular reads. She even has a Formspring so you can ask her about anything your heart desires! Have a happy week!

Happy Friday! It is definitely time for some more weekend inspiration! This beauty is the inspiration for millions of fashion blogs and was one of the first blogs I got really into years back. Meet Alix of The Cherry Blossom Girl! This fashion designer from Paris has somewhat of a dream life! You will know what I mean when you visit her amazing site.  She has been blogging since 2007 and has evolved into one of the most influential fashion bloggers in the world. Take a look at some of her beautiful images below.

Alix captures romantic, soft focus pictures that make life look like a darling dream. Feminine and delicate, her amazing photography is the first thing that pops into my mind when I need something sweet. It’s like a fashion fairy tale for those of us girls who love pretty things and refuse to grow up!

Are these images inspiring you to do something special this weekend? Maybe you can make some homemade holiday decorations, take a stroll at dusk or enjoy tea with a favorite friend? Whatever you decide to do, make it your goal to capture the beauty around you as Alix does with every shot. The way the light streams through your room, a stack of old books, your grandmothers antique jewels. Whether you are into photography or not, at least take a mental note of the beauty that surrounds us all.  Create a catalogue in your brain of all the little things that inspire you, then you can draw from it when life lacks a little luster.

Make sure to check out Alix’s blog and add her to your favorites because she is defintely not one you would want to miss. After only a week I had missed so much that I spent forever getting my fill of the confectionary sweetness of these shots! Keep up the good work, Alix! LuLu*s loves you!

Need some cheer to brighten up your Monday? Don’t worry because I have some eye candy for you! Time for another round of my blog favorites! Meet Kelty, the artistic genius behind Steep Street, her site showcasing her multitude of talents! This “Jill-of-all trades” has many tricks up her sleeve including amazing photography, web design as well as printed goodies like books and stationary. She has many brilliantly shot photos including weddings, couples, portraits and famillies. While all her beautiful shots are breathtaking, my favorite are a weekly series called T.G.I.H. These are fun and fancy photoshoots where Kelty and her twin sister, Hannah, get together to create to perfect shots.

Hannah’s fiery, red hair and porcelain skin add the perfect edge to every photo while Kelty’s talented eye frames each photo brilliantly. Hannah is a chameleon of sorts and is able to play so many different, magical characters.

Make sure to check out this site! You can enjoy some beautiful imagery and appreciate the talent of the lovely Kelty! Also, make sure to visit her Etsy shop for some handmade goodies.  Next time you are in need of an amazing photographer in the Boston area, this is your girl!
