Captured by snapshot artist, Nan Goldin, the newest edition of Grey Magazine includes a lovely spread from the dynamic duo we just can’t get enough of; Rodarte. The candid nature of Goldin’s artistry creates wispy transitions and quiet, statuesque moments that blur the lines between ghostly and angelic.

Already looking onto fall and winter 2012, we see the tawny visions of the Mulleavy sisters burgeoning from the outback. Inspired by Australian landscapes, the ferrous earth tones and Aboriginal-inspired handprints are an appropriate tie to the southern continent that is at this very moment basking in the first light of autumn.

Trend Alert: Southwest Prints

Last week when I took home my sixth or seventh Southwestern Print Dress, I thought to myself, Sienna, maybe you should share your love with all of the lovely LuLu*s fashionistas out there? Surely some of these trend savvy gals are into the prints!

Well, I’m not going to force anyone into loving the bold colors and geometric patterns that come along with these fresh, tribal styles, but take a look, and perhaps you’ll see something you like!

As part of their Fall 2011 collection, Proenza Schouler rocked the southwest prints on tapered-leg pants, warm knit sweaters and cute tube dresses. And Rodarte (bottom right) was feeling the sheer geometry of it all as well with this boldly patterned jumper.

Out of these six items, I manage to already own three of them (all three dresses), and they are my absolute favorites right now! I wore the Tulle Phoenix Heat Dress to Easter AND a wedding, and I wear the Agave Girl Dress and the Obey Navajo Tank Dress to work all the time; they are soooo comfortable!

NYC Fashion Week Update: Rodarte’s Romantic Portrayal of the American Grasslands

One of the most anticipated shows this season was Rodarte. Partially because of the Mulleavy sisters’ success at pulling the heartstrings of the rich and famous, as well as the seasoned fashion experts they’ve created quite a cult following. Yesterday was no exception as you could almost feel the fashion world take a deep breath just to calm down before their show began.

Luckily for the Mulleavy sisters, and for our anxiety issues, the women behind the label have once again hit gold. And quite literally this time.

The models were brushed in gold with shining golden locks walking down and around a runway dressed in gowns with printed golden wheat stocks. Sky blue was infused into the collection as well as a brilliant sunset red to complete a range of prairie tones.

And now, with no further ado, here is the golden hour of Rodarte for Fall 2011:

Black Swan Star Natalie Portman Graces Vogue US for January 2011!

2010 ended by unleashing an actress onto us in the most unforgettable kind of way. I would even be so bold as to call it the year of Natalie Portman. Not only did Portman stun our senses with her epic performance in Black Swan but she graced the magazine stands and won over our softer senses with ease and poise as well. I will never forget the image of her “flapping” wings and back muscles straining while she danced wearing a Rodarte tutu or this Vogue US spread of her for January 2011 by Peter Lindbergh.

Director of the Black Swan, Aronofsky, said this of Portman:

“The only way to be perfect,is to allow chaos and madness into your life. Natalie has very few opportunities to express the dangerous side of her, and there’s a lot of colors there. She teases; she’s playful and sexy and so beautiful it hurts.”

Not only is her new physical prowess apparent in her every movement but also a sense that she has, like Nina in the Black Swan, finally found and conquered her “black swan”.

Rodarte’s Fashion Empire Grows!

Two designers who’ve captured the attention of the fashion forward folk with their awkward personalities and intricately developed design sense have been exponentially increasing their fashion empire in the last year. With Anna Wintour (American Vogue’s Editor in Chief) picking up Rodarte and placing the brand in her stride the Mulleavy sisters don’t have an option but to succeed. Now is this fair, was it a roll of the dice that Wintour picked them, or was it really their extreme talent that is carrying them so quickly along?

Laura and Kate Mulleavy have just won the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award and Hintmag has just pushed their eery and awe inspiring video in their honor. The sisters founded the brand Rodarte in 2005 in Pasadena, CA. By 2008 they had become the first Americans to receive the Swiss Textiles Award and in 2009 they were awarded Womenswear Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).

Today’s Fashion Week Update: NYC

I have been watching Style.com for new videos and fashion show updates… So far there have been some kinda crazy shows and some that I find quite amusing.

I would check out Alexander Wang and Rodarte for starts. Thakoon is one that I found the video interview with the designer a little more interesting than the actual show. However, I was not thoroughly disappointed and found that Thakoon launches a line for the romantic visionary this season.

This woman is traveling abroad without even getting on the plane. The prints were bright florals, that sometimes do, as he says in this video, have a chintzy Americana sportswear feel.

However, Thakoon’s floral prints were anything but. Printed on diaphanous chiffon that gave life to the life printed on them. Thakoon capitalized on the more blunt trend this season of black/white graphic print and used an off white with his black to tie it into the other dresses.

Overall, visually the color story was all about the power of two: black white, pink white, green white, etc. Dresses were gathered and pleated and there was an interesting play with structure and unstructured.
