Hair Flair: How to Make Your Own Beachy Waves

With the weather beginning to really warm up, the last thing most of us want to do is spend hours with a curling iron or blow dryer. That’s time well spent at the beach or river instead!
However, I know that we do still want to look cute, even though we don’t want to work for it. While most people would scoff and say, “wishful thinking!” we girls are lucky enough to have a few tricks up our sleeves. During the summer, we can look just as cute with beachy waves as we can with barrel curls — and spend half the time doing it!

Now, there are several really great products out there for giving your hair that sexy, beachy vibe, but if you’d rather spend your money on cute dresses and shoes, then why not try these super simple steps to create your own ocean waves at home.

How to Make Your Own Beach Hair Spray:
1. Buy a plastic bottle with a spray nozzle.
2. Fill with water almost to the top.
3. Add a few tablespoons of sea salt (not table salt — that will just make your hair look gross).
4. Add three small squirts of your favorite hair gel.
5. A little bit of conditioner or coconut or olive oil to fight off the drying power of the salt.
6. Shake all together, and then spray all over hair. If your hair is dry, spritz until really damp. If wet, just make sure it’s all coated well.
Now, the thing with beach hair is that you don’t want it to look too polished or perfectly in place, so it’s important to give it that kind-of gritty texture. You can do that by simply scrunching your hair if you already have natural wave. If you want more waviness, you can also braid your hair or twist it up in a bun until it dries. Then simply shake out your hair and ta-da!

(Side note: If you can’t help buying cute shoes, dress, AND hair products, check out Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray Fekkai ‘Beachcomber’ Leave-In Conditioner, or C.O. Bigelow Kusco Murphy Beach Hair, recommendations courtesy of hamptons.guestofaguest.com.
So who is ready to give up the curling iron? Are you girls going to give beach waves a whirl?

Twist and Shout: Quick Hair Style Idea

Mornings at my place are usually a harried affair:  waking up fifteen minutes before work, it’s a mad dash to the shower and the closet to race out the door looking somewhat presentable. This obviously leaves no time for blow-drying or hair-doing…so unless I wanted to look like a giant frizzball all day, I had to come up with a quick remedy.

After a few weeks of truly tragic experiments, I found the ultimate solution:  rope braids! When I was little my mom used to do my hair in this awesome style to keep it out of my face.

Back in the day!

When I got old enough to do it myself, however, I realized how extremely cute and versatile it could be:

Twist Your Ponytail
Twist in the Front

Twists with Ribbon

Here’s are two videos on how to do a basic twist. Check ‘em out, and practice on a friend!

Besides the fact that this style looks so modern and chic, one of the best thing about it is how awesome it looks when you take it out!

When my hair is still damp in the morning, I throw it up into a fast single French twist and leave it for an hour or two. When I take it out, perfect waves with no frizz! Curling irons watch out!

Hair How-To: Easy Glam Waves!

In addition to her stunning D&G dress that had me green with envy, Scarlett Johansson was rockin’ some glamorous, full body waves at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards.

I love this look. It’s classic, it’s universally flattering, and it always seems to pair so well with easy breezy sundresses when the weather gets warmer.

I’m not so much of a pro when it comes to handling a curling iron, but this look doesn’t need to be perfect. The beauty of it lies in its loose and carefree nature.

That being said: there is some technique involved. That’s where the lovely Tiffany of MakeUpTiffany comes in handy! One of my fav YouTube beauty gals, Tiffany has an awesome Curls with Volume tutorial that you MUST watch!

Tiffany advises using a 1.5″ curling iron and a heat protectant spray of your choice. Take your time and make sure to heat the whole strand of hair evenly. Once done, gently shake out the curls and put on that glamorous strapless dress. Yowza! Now you’re ready to rock!
