Get Gorgeous with Michelle Phan

If you are interested in beauty and makeup and you haven’t heard of Michelle Phan, well, you can thank me later. This YouTube beauty guru has been long been considered the authority on internet makeup tutorials. With a fantastic range that includes both conceptual and everyday makeup, her videos are respected and referred to regularly in the beauty community. Michelle is the first female YouTuber to reach over a million subscribers, and her video views exceed 361 million! Michelle recently joined the Lancome team and is currently making videos using their fantastic products.

Being on YouTube almost more than Facebook and being obsessed with all things beauty and makeup, I have following Ms. Phan for quite some time. Let me walk you through a few of my favorite videos, shown below.

Ahh, the Purple Disco Tutorial! Not only is this video fantastically edited and easy to follow, Michelle is one of those super talented artists who manages to make purple eyeshadow look somehow subtle and glam. This tutorial gives you step by step instructions on how to achieve a perfectly sparkly and sultry evening eye look. The main reason I love her syle is that Michelle always manages to make her makeup look effortless, regardless of the intensity of the colors. The look is never overdone and always celebrates her features.

Fast and fresh makeup in the morning is an instant confidence booster. Growing up pale and awkward, I quickly discovered that blush and mascara were my friend, and from that a love of cosmetics was born. It is all about enhancing your natural beauty and feeling great! Enjoy this tutorial shown above, which gives you fast tips on how to enhance your look in just 5 minutes! I love that Michelle always mentions the importance of defining your brows. Giving you an instant frame around your face, your eyebrows are one of the most important parts of your face.

Michelle definitely knows how to have some fun with makeup, as shown in the video above. Based on a look from Lady Gaga’s video, Bad Romance, Michelle shows us how to achieve the wide eyed look made famous by the pop sensation. One of several Lady Gaga inspired videos, this tutorial is my favorite for the fun computer generated effects at the end. Receiving over 20 million views, this video is a web classic and has been referenced many times.

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of coffee, coffee, coffee! At least once a week, I’ll treat myself to a latte from our local coffee house, The Naked Lounge. They make the most amazing drinks, and I’m always dazzled by the gorgeous art work for each cup (one of my favorites is pictured above). Curious, I searched around on youtube and found this great little video. Now I’m really inspired to try it myself, especially with the chocolate sauce, yum! Any baristas out there who know more about coffee art?

It’s always around this time of year (hot hot summer) that I realize my serious lack of cute tank tops and start to panic. That’s why I’m so glad I found this awesome tutorial from the crafty itzblitzzz on YouTube. She has an easy, simple layout for constructing a racerback out of any old t-shirt. So check it out, dig up one of those baggy shirts you never wear, and turn it into a whole new look.

Friday Style ICON: Iris Apfel

When I was living in NYC, I happened upon an exhibit featuring an eccentric fashion icon named Iris Apfel. The exhibit was called Rare Bird, a title that only begins to describe the collection of clothes that were on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

I became enamored with Iris — along with half of New York City, I presume — and was recently thinking back on the experience with awe. Then the other day, I found this GREAT video of Iris being interviewed and filmed while shopping.

My favorite thing about Iris Apfel is that she views fashion with so much energy and shows no fear in doing what she wants with it!

Hair Inspiration: Dita Von Teese

I am in love with the seemingly effortless glamour and flirty waves of Dita Von Teese’s hair style in the above pic. Inspired by hair of the 1940′s, Dita has perfected this look on her own, which in turn, inspired me to give it a try.

Dita recently tweeted on her Twitter page that she uses “Hot rollers in small+med sizes,” and sometimes “iron+clips” in order to set her hair into retro glam waves. I found the perfect YouTube tutorial which goes over how to style and set the rollers to achieve a similar look.

Now all I need are some good hot rollers. Any suggestions?

Weezer Muse

I wanted to share with you guys a fun music video by Weezer for their song, “If You’re Wondering If I Want You To.” It features the Weezer gang in a Pleasantville type of town called … what else? Weezerville. They’re four best friends, and life is sweet in Weezerville.

Enter the femme fatale, played by the gorgeous and charming actress, Odette Yustman. Her character is what inspired this blog and a couple YouTube hair tutorials on the web. Check out her awesome costuming, makeup and hair!! I love the soft feminine look of the dress combined with the flawlessly crafted, 40′s-inspired victory rolls.

YouTube MakeUp Guru: Hollywood Noir Makeup

On a typical Wednesday night, I found myself once again searching on YouTube for a cool vintage makeup tutorial. My goal was to find just the right retro look for those upcoming holiday parties.

It was then that I came across one of the best Dita Von Teese inspired tutorials I have ever seen by makeup artist and writer, Ashley, known on YouTube as HollywoodNoirMakeup.

Ashley’s vids are so wonderful because you know you’re seeing professional quality work brought to you in an everyday, understandable language. Ashley uses her creativity and makeup artistry experience to teach her viewers anything from how to get the perfect red lip, to how to shape your brows, to more artistic and edgy makeup looks for those looking for a little something different. She is truly a makeup wizard with a MAC brush as her wand.

Here is the Dita Von Teese look I found. Give it a view, and watch the glamorous transformation begin!

Vintage Hair: 1930′s Faux Bob

My freshman year of college, I took one of the most risky leaps when it comes to hair: I chopped off my long locks into a 20′s style bob. I left the salon with chin length hair that was shaved in back with short pixie bangs in front.

The look was a blast, but I eventually missed the versatility of my long hair, which took a whole year to grow back. Now,when I get a hankering for short hair again, I’ll know just to do this look – a faux bob – sported by women in the 30′s. Very old Hollywood.

Short hair for a day without the salon visit or the year long commitment? Yes please!

What You’ll Need

1. Sponge Roller Set – about $10 at Target

2. Spray Bottle

3. Bobby Pins

4. Hair Spray

5. Hair Net

What to Do

1. Spray your hair damp with some water

2. Roll hair in sponge rollers (please see video below for placement)

3. Secure rollers in a hair net

4. Sleep on overnight (surprisingly comfy) or let air dry for at least 3hrs.

5. In the morning, remove rollers closest to the face and brush each out individually, smoothing with pomade

6. Remove rollers in back, pin back hair to the nape of the neck so it looks bob-length

7. Let the front curls frame your face

8. Hair spray!!

9. Just for fun, tell everyone you cut your hair

I highly recommend watching the video below by the talented LisaFreemontStreet that inspired me to do this look. She works wonders when it comes to vintage hair styling. I’ve been learning so much about how to use hot rollers, sponge rollers, pin curls, and pillow rollers just by watching her vids. Happy styling!

Vintage Hair: The Beehive

I had so much fun with this look, and it definitely makes a statement.

You’ll need to give yourself a little extra time in the morning and have plenty of bobby pins on hand (not kidding). The result is totally worth it! Sixties vintage for a new look!

What You’ll Need:

1. A homemade “Bumpit” (made from hair extensions wrapped in a hair net) – make sure it matches your hair color.

2. Fine Tooth Comb

3. Hair spray

4. Flower or decorative hair clip

5. Bobby pins

What To Do:

1. Part hair into three sections: Front, Middle (largest section), Back. Tie each into a pony tail

2. Pin your homemade “bumpit” securely behind the middle section.

3. Pin the back ponytail up to cover the “bumpit.”

4. Take the middle section out of ponytail an pin down over the hive of hair. This part should look smooth and flawless.

5. Untie the front section, make a sideways part and sweep hair softly across the forehead. Pin in place.

6. Hair spray EVERYTHING.

7. Pin a cute flower or clip on the side of the hive.
